Quick Weather Guide:
Spring in Lodi,
February to April
Located in the lush Central Valley, spring brings green to the
vineyards, fruit and nut trees and mile after mile of produce crops—like
asparagus and lettuce—just starting to pop up. Though temperature
changes tend to be more noticeable inland, the weather rarely dips
below 40 degrees in the spring (mostly at night), and is usually
warm enough for a light shirt or shirt-sleeves during the day.
Lodi tends to be popular most of the year due to the temperate
climate, so you'll likely need to make reservations for top hotels,
restaurants and especially popular Wine Country events in advance.
When booking your hotel, often the innkeepers or hotel managers
can make reservations or secure tickets to Wine Country events
for you.
What to pack
Regardless of the season temperatures can quickly drop by
more than 30 degrees in just a few hours, so it’s always a good
idea to bring layered clothing. Have a warm jacket for evenings,
or early morning hikes around lakes and local
wildlife preserves. Days
tend to heat up quickly, so you'll probably want to get rid of your jacket
by mid-morning—and be ready for shirtsleeves after lunch. Jeans are acceptable
almost anywhere in this rural farming community, though it’s never a bad idea
to have a nice skirt or slacks for evening dinners or fancier events.
Dining Style
As in most of California, there's rarely an occasion you'll need a tie or sport
jacket. Even the most sophisticated restaurants usually welcome diners dressed
in pretty much anything appropriate for a casual office environment: slacks
and a sweater, a comfortable skirt, pants, whatever—though for really upscale
dining its best to avoid jeans if possible.
The People You'll Meet
Though much of the region is agricultural, you'll find a fairly
cosmopolitan group of folks in Lodi, due to its proximity to
the state's capitol, Sacramento and Lodi's increasing desire to
be taken seriously as an emerging wine region. The recently completed
Lodi Wine and Visitor's Center at www.visitlodi.com/winecountry.asp is
a great first place to stop and get the lay of the land. There are
plenty of opportunities, however, to get back to nature—and meet
local wildlife enthusiasts who flock to Lodi to see local cranes
and other creates—at the local preserves.
Typical temperatures
In April, things can be a bit nippy during the day, especially if it’s raining.
However, as April turns to May and June, the days get plenty warm, even up into
the mid-80's as summer approaches. Evenings usually remain fairly cool, dipping
into the 40s and 50s, so you'll need to bring a light jacket, regardless.
Rainfall
There's always a chance of rain throughout April, but May and
June tend to be drier. Check the weather, and bring a water-resistant
jacket if you're traveling in the early spring.
